The major driving force for this meta was Maliss. Some said it wasn't worth playing Lancea to beat this deck but after this climb I'm convinced it is. If White Binder hit the field or was parked in GY, the game was over. All they need to do is hold White Binder to banish Splash Mage and set up MTP banish on your OTK tool.
That said, White Binder did not hit the field that often. Lancea, Fuwalos, Nibiru, Gamma were targeted handtraps to force them on a half board when they resolve. Lancea performed the best, Fuwalos was fine but the important part was that it gave draws to deal with the remaining non-engine in hand. The hardest part of Maliss is dealing with their non-engine. Some hands cannot beat combinations of Impulse, Nibiru, Imperm even when they are stopped.
I did not think Imperm or Veiler were strong enough since negating an effect does not hold much value if Maliss still retained Link Material to get to their Link 3. Apollousa is a threat that I lose too, but if my handtraps resolved they do not get to Apo.
Cutting Veiler coincided with cutting Small World which was an idea to circumvent opponent's Lancea. This also let me cut Dotscaper which gave me more room for extenders like Subtraction and Addition to compensate for losing 3 direct access to Circular. Defenser has been invaluable for pushes and setting up Double Linguriboh going 2nd or Double Laplacian going 1st. I can't see myself going back to Spirits to compensate for Small World either.
I would play 3 Diameter, but I wanted to get as close to 40 as possible to draw Lancea as much as I can. You could cut Gamma & Driver but I could not think of 1 comparable handtrap that could occupy Gamma's role. Like I didn't want to play Veiler or Imperm already.
Matchup Breakdown in Total (187 Duels; 87 Heads, 100 Tails)
Due to Tenpai's influence: 100 1st, 87 2nd
- 59 Maliss (31.6%, W/R = 56%)
- 21 SE Millennium (11%, W/R = 61%)
- 14 Tenpai (7.5%, W/R = 64%)
If people thought Blue Eyes was everywhere, it cannot compare to Maliss. This deck was 30% of the field, similar to my experience with Tenpai's release. For reference, I encountered about 40% Tearlaments at its peak.
Ryzeal around the corner has me apprehensive about this deck's performance but I believe the solution is Wicckid. Getting to Wicckid under Detonator is an issue but not completely unsolvable!
